Order of the Golden Kite, 3rd class, in original fitted case of issue, 1890-1947.

Silver gilt, enamels. Measures 58.8 mm in height (incl. eyelet), 55.1 mm in width, weighs 43.5 g. A very well-made piece.

In very fine condition, with great presentation despite the following detriments: the center part of the 5 o'clock ray is slightly bent towards the back which caused the red enamel to crack without any enamel loss. The center piece of the 9 o'clock ray shows a small chip to the enamel, not reaching through to the metal. The center piece of the 12 o'clock ray shows two chips to the enamel that do reach through to the metal. The verso has a scratched hand-made inscription. One of the screws on the reverse is missing; the other three are in place and tight.

The order comes with a narrow neck ribbon and a round lapel pin, both of which appear to be original. The neck ribbon is in green moiré silk, stained purple in four places, probably due to combined exposure to water and the purple velvet lining the issue box. The stains are small and not too intrusive to the eye.

The lapel pin is clean, there is a slight dent to the rim. The wear to the silk covering the rim, seen in the photo at about x20 magnification, is not easy to notice with the naked eye.

The issue box is in black lacquered wood with velvet fitted pad for the medallion. The inside of the lid is padded and lined with purple silk. In excellent condition, showing just barely noticeable contact points and scuffs. The hinge is tight, and the latch works fine.

The Order of the Golden Kite was established by Imperial Prescript of February 12, 1890. It was bestowed upon persons who had rendered distinguished military service, and was awarded only to Japanese. It also carried an annuity in different amounts, depending on the class. The annuity ranged from 1,500 yen for the 1st class to 150 yen for the 7th class. The order was abolished by Government Ordinance in 1947.
