Real Photo Postcard with a Political Rally or Protest Demonstration Following the Feb. 1917 Revolution, dated 19 May 1917.
The size is standard 5 ½" x 3 ½", printed on matte photo paper lined on the verso for use as a postcard. Postally used and marked, showing a Russian Imperial 7-kopek postal stamp and two cancellation stamps, unfortunately too incomplete to read. The postcard is addressed in Russian, to a gentleman residing at someone's estate in the Governorate of Livonia (part of modern Latvia and Estonia). The message appears to be written in one of the Baltic languages, likely to be Latvian. The photo captures a moment of a political rally or demonstration, with a well-dressed orator holding a flag, addressing an audience of sailors and naval officers, and one Imperial Army soldier in long overcoat.
In good to very good condition. There are two vertical creases that cracked the emulsion, and a corner crease at top left. Tilting the photo to reflect a bright light reveals mild scuffing, too. However, none of this wear is easily noticeable or too detractive. The verso is reasonably clean. The ink is a little faded but the lines are crisp and clear. Overall, the photo presents well, much better than under the merciless eye of the camera lens.
Please note that the penny in our photo is for size reference.
