Medal for the Defense of Stalingrad, Variation 1, 1940s issue.
In brass; 32.0 mm wide; weighs 17.2 g not including the suspension and connecting link. First variation of the medal featuring a separate eyelet soldered to the medallion.
In excellent condition. The raised details on both sides of the medallion are perfect and exceptionally crisp. The obverse is completely free of any wear noticeable to the naked eye; on the reverse, there is only a very minimal wear to the high points. Both sides of the medallion are completely free from dings, scratches, edge knocks or any other wear visible to the naked eye. The toning to the brass is even and attractive throughout, free of blemishes or major oxidation spots; the original "gilt" mint luster is clearly visible in recessed areas around the artwork and lettering, especially on the obverse.
The medal comes on an original suspension, a WW2 two-layer model in steel with self-locking pin. The old, possibly original ribbon is well- preserved and sound. The connecting link appears to be original; its ends are still joined with solder. Overall, this is a truly outstanding specimen of the Stalingrad Medal, one of the better examples we've offered in recent years.
