Photo of a Group of Cheka Officers and Enlisted Men with Dzerzhinsky Banner in the Background, circa 1920s.
Large size, measures 9" x 6 ½", printed on glossy photo paper. In the photo, a detachment of Cheka officers and enlisted men are posing for the camera in their office in front of a banner with a profile portrait of the Cheka founder Felix Dzerzhinsky. What can be seen of the lettering on the banner reads "Chekist! Your place is on the frontlines of class struggle!"
In excellent condition despite the missing tip of the lower left-hand corner and minor scuffing to the emulsion, visible only when tilting the photo to reflect a bright light. The verso shows traces of old glue that used to keep the photo on its backing, quite irrelevant on that side. The image is in exceptionally sharp focus, providing a great opportunity to have a close look at the uniforms and insignia and, more importantly, the men's faces. Because these are the faces of the Red Terror, the faces of those who tortured and killed their own people, often their own family members.
