Real Photo Postcard with a Group of Imperial Russian Soldiers Under a Revolutionary Banner, February - November 1917, the photo taken definitely after overthrowing the czar but before the Socialist Revolution.
Standard postcard size 5 ½" x 3 ½", printed on matte photo paper with lining on the verso for use as a postcard. The image presents a group of Imperial Russian servicemen, still wearing Imperial uniforms and decorations, sitting under a revolutionary banner which reads "Liberty! Equality and Brotherhood! Land and Freedom!" "Land and Freedom" was the motto of the socialist-revolutionary party which they "inherited" from the name of the secret society formed in the 1870s with the goal of establishing "anarchy and collectivism" in the country.
In excellent condition. The image is in very sharp focus, providing a great opportunity to examine the decorations, uniforms, insignia, and faces. Tilting the photo to reflect a bright light reveals a couple of diagonal scuffs virtually invisible when looking at it at a normal viewing angle. The verso is unmarked and mostly clean, showing only mild soiling.
The imagery very accurately reflects the disarray reigning in the last months of Imperial Russian Army. The men in the photo wear their regulation visor hats with cockades, but one does not even have his visor hat with him. Some wear shoulder boards, some do not, and judging by the banner in the background, they plunged into politics, - anathema for a cohesive army.
Please note that the penny in our photo is for size reference.
