Silver Cigarette Case by the Moscow Jewelry Workshop KhAYuS (ХАЮС), with Hand-Engraved Industrial Artwork in Early Constructivist Style, 1930-33.
Measures 112 mm x 80 mm x 18 mm, weighs 159 g. Blue colored cabochon thumb piece of polished glass. The beautiful hand-engraved artwork highlights Industrialization, the main direction and driving force of the Soviet economy at the time. This particular artwork pattern is known among Russian collectors as "The USSR - Country of Workers and Peasants." Early Constructivist style of the artwork may suggest an earlier vintage, mid- to late 1920s, but the Moscow Jewelry Workshop KhAYuS was founded in 1930 and used the maker mark ХАЮС only from 1930 to 1933. The workshop continued to function independently as a highly regarded manufacturer of luxury items, until 1967, albeit under a different name, at which point it was absorbed into a much larger Moscow Jewelry Factory (МЮЗ).
The interior of the panels is gilded. Both sides show a silver hallmark "875" with a worker's head, the kind used from 1927-1954. Next to each of the silver hallmarks is the maker mark ХАЮС ("KhAYuS").
The case is in very good condition, showing an occasional shallow dent, mild scratches and scuffs, and just a hint of patina. The wear adds more to the air of age and authenticity of the case than it detracts. The gilt finish on the interior is pale but clearly visible. Structurally, the case is in excellent condition. The cabochon closure button functions smoothly; the hinge is intact; the alignment of the two panels is perfect.
This is a very uncommon cigarette case, with great artistic value, and will take a proud place in a collection of early Stalin Era artifacts.
