Officer Badge of the 4th Nesvizh Grenadier Regiment (in Honor) of General-Field Marshal Barclay de Tolly, 1908-1917.

In silver, enamels; measures 42.4 mm in height, 42.4 mm in width; weighs 24.6 g not including the screw plate. A magnificent piece of massive four-piece construction: the wreath with enameled St. George ribbon, cypher of Emperor Nicholas II, and flames above the grenade are separate parts attached to the cross by wires. The reverse shows an "84" silver hallmark with Kokoshnik and Greek character Alpha, the emblem of the St. Petersburg assay inspection. There is also an additional round assayer's hallmark with Kokoshnik as well as the Cyrillic maker mark AH ("AN"), of the St. Petersburg silversmith Aleksey Nasedkin (according to the Russian Gold and Silverwork from the 15th to 20th Century by Postnikova-Loseva, Platonova and Ulyanova, C. 1995, fig. 1219)

The badge is in excellent condition. The green enamel on the cross as well as the black and orange enamel of the scrolls on the wreath is extremely well-preserved, having only some microscopic contact marks; it is completely free of chips, flaking or any other wear visible to the naked eye. The fragile gilt finish is mostly washed out, but traces of it are still visible on the edges of the cross, recessed areas of the wreath and especially the domed center under the cypher representing a grenade. The details of the cipher and wreath show only the minimal wear to the high points. The wires connecting the parts of the badge are perfectly tight.

The screw post is of full length of approx. 18 mm, has not been reduced. The silver wing nut is of the period and fits perfectly, although it shows a maker mark ЛП ("LP") of a different maker. There is also a small Kokoshnik silver hallmark next to the maker mark on the underside of the wing nut.

Any badges of the 4th Grenadier Regiment are exceedingly rare. According to the Regimental Badges of Imperial Russia by Viktor Kempf published in 2012, not a single officer's badge in silver or silver and gold had been offered for sale in an international auction, whereas only one officer's badge in brass and silver was known to exist (apparently in a private collection) and only two examples of the enlisted man's badge in brass were sold in 2005 and 2008 in Russian auctions. It is also quite telling that both the Regimental Badges of Imperial Russia by Kempf and Badges of Russia by Patrikeev and Boinovich apparently shows a photo of the same example of the officer's badge.
