Order of the Golden Kite, 4th class, includes the badge on suspension ribbon with rosette, and a lapel pin, in original fitted case of issue, 1890s-1947.

The badge. Silver gilt, enamels. Measures 49.9 mm in height (incl. eyelet ball), 45.9 mm in width. The ribbon appears to be original and features a 22.0mm-wide rosette distinguishing the 4th class from the lower classes. In excellent condition. The badge is pristine; the suspension ribbon has a small stain on the reverse, otherwise perfectly clean.

The lapel pin is 12.5 mm in diameter and appears to be original, the colors of the silk slightly faded. In excellent condition otherwise.

The issue case is in black lacquered wood with velvet hinged fitted pad for the badge. The lid is lined with purple silk on the inside. In very fine to excellent condition, showing just a couple of tiny chips to the lacquer, and minuscule contact points, not too intrusive to the eye and blending in well with the deep black sheen of the lacquer. The hinge and latch of the issue case are tight and in perfect working order.

The Order of the Golden Kite was established by Imperial Prescript of February 12, 1890. It was bestowed upon persons who had rendered distinguished military service, and was awarded only to Japanese nationals. It also carried an annuity in different amounts, depending on the class. The annuity ranged from 1,500 yen for the 1st class to 150 yen for the 7th class. The order was abolished by Government Ordinance in 1947.
