Guard's Badge, circa mid-1940s.

Brass, enamels; measures 45.9 x 36.0 mm; weighs 16.9 g without the screw plate. Like the other wartime versions, this Guard's badge lacks the fringe at the bottom of the banner; the upper and lower edges of the banner are adorned instead with a rudimentary decorative pattern making an impression of a twisted rope. This particular variety is a so-called "Classic Oval" according to Airapetyan's Breast Badges of the Red Army, 1941-1945 /p. 51, fig.7.2/. It features a "wave effect" to enamel of the banner with a fish scale like pattern to the metal surface underneath. The wreath is characteristically wide.

In very fine to excellent condition, far better than most surviving Guard's badges of WW2 era. The red enamel on the banner and star is essentially perfect, having only some tiny contact marks and retaining a nice luster. The white enamel has some minuscule hairlines but is sound and otherwise intact.

The details of the wreath are beautifully defined and crisp, with a good amount of the original gilt finish still present. The screw post is full length, approx. 13 mm, and comes with an original WW2 style screw plate in zinc-plated steel with Pobeda Factory logo. Note that the black tar-like substance around the base of the screw post was applied at the factory; it is typical of wartime manufacture and is not a result of repair. To summarize, it is a beautiful example of a wartime Guard's Badge.
