Medal for the Defense of Stalingrad, Variation 1, 1940s issue.

In brass; 32.1 mm wide; weighs 17.3 g not including the suspension and connecting link. First variation of the medal featuring a separate eyelet soldered to the medallion.

In excellent condition. The raised details on both sides of the medallion are perfect and exceptionally crisp. The obverse is completely free of any wear noticeable to the naked eye; on the reverse, there are only some tiny contact marks barely visible without magnification, no significant scratches or dings. Both sides of the medallion are free of blemishes or major oxidation spots, having only a minor amount of tarnish which adds character; the original "gilt" mint luster is beautifully preserved and bright throughout.

The medal comes on an original suspension, a WW2 two-layer model in brass and steel with self-locking pin. The old, probably original ribbon is extremely well-preserved, clean and sound. The connecting link appears to be original as well; its ends are still joined with solder. Overall, this is a truly outstanding specimen of the Stalingrad Medal, one of the better examples we've offered in recent years.
