Broad Pennant of a Naval Unit or Formation Commander, circa 1980s.
In wool bunting, measures 5' long, 4 ½ " wide at base. Features USSR naval ensign at the base, followed by a slightly tapered red field ending in swallow-tale. No markings on hoist sleeve. Excellent condition.
This type of pennant was hoisted just below the commission pennant on the masthead of the leading ship of the fleet, unit or formation (above squadron size) while the ship was underway. This particular broad pennant is of relatively small size making it suitable for a leader of a formation of smaller vessels, perhaps coastal patrol boats, minesweepers or submarine chasers. Its compact size makes it easy to display.
