In very good to excellent condition. The image is in sharp focus, providing an excellent opportunity to have a close look at the details of uniforms, insignia, and Yeryshev's Hero Star. Minor wrinkles and creases that can be noticed when tilting the photo to reflect a bright light are practically invisible when looking at it at a normal viewing angle. The verso is slightly soiled. The inscription in purple ink, in a schoolchild's handwriting, reads "Yeryshev Vasiliy Nikolayevich. Hero of the Soviet Union". His name is also printed in pencil at the bottom of the verso.

Vasiliy Yeryshev (1921 - 2008; enlisted in RKKA since 1941) received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his actions on 24 September 1943 during the forced crossing of the Dnieper near Balyko-Shchuchinka, in the Kagarlyk District of the Kiev Region. Then a sr. sergeant, he and his squad crossed the river, seized a bridgehead and held it, killing up to sixty enemy soldiers and officers, destroying five pillboxes, and neutralizing several guns and mortars.

In 1945, Yeryshev finished a course at the Penza Artillery School, and was promoted to junior lieutenant. What we see in the photo was probably the moment when he had just graduated the school and had a picture taken to commemorate this moment.

Research Materials: copy of the article about Yeryshev in the catalog Heroes of the Soviet Union (contains his photo).
