Suspended on a paulownia crest of green leaves and purple flowers, veined on the obverse and inscribed on the reverse with characters meaning "order of merit decoration". The paulownia crest is suspended from a golden loop through which the neck ribbon is threaded. The neck ribbon is in watered silk, 36 mm wide with 5 mm red edges. The silk is yellow, much less common than the regulation white with red edges.

The set includes a miniature rosette, apparently to be worn as a lapel pin.

The issue case measures 235 x 112 x 50 mm, in solid wood with beveled edges and rounded corners, finished in black lacquer. The latch appears to be in brass. The lid is decorated with inlaid gold-plated paulownia crest and the title in kanji. Inside, the case is lined with purple velvet with two fitted pads for the star and the badge. The pad for the badge is hinged, opening into space for the neck ribbon.

Every component of the set is in excellent condition. The only wear is slightly rubbed off finish on the clasp of the ribbon, and occasional spots of craquelure and scuffing to the lacquer of the case. The wear to the issue case becomes visible only when tilting it so that the spot you are looking at reflects a bright light.

The Order of the Rising Sun, the first national decoration of Japan, was established by the Council of State Decree of April 10, 1875. It can be bestowed on the military and civilians, Japanese and foreign, as a general order or merit.
