Silver, lacquer, 37.5 mm in height incl. eyelet, 32.0 mm in width and approx. 2.1 mm thick at the edge; weighs 17.6 g not including the suspension and connecting link.

Features U-shaped eyelet but unlike the far more common Variation 3, this version of the medal does not have a serial number. This is essentially a transitional variation between Variation 3 (U-shaped eyelet, numbered) and Variation 4 (rounded flat eyelet, unnumbered) according to the McDaniel classification. The letters are covered with "hot baked" red enamel as opposed to the lacquer as on the earlier issues of the medal. This scarce version is not shown in the Comprehensive Guide to Soviet Orders and Medals by McDaniel and Schmitt, but it is shown and described on the Mondvor.narod.ru (Type 2 Variation 3 Sub-variation 3 according to the Mondvor classification.)

In very fine to excellent condition. The enamel in the letters is perfect. The raised details of the artwork and lettering are extremely well preserved and crisp. There are just a couple of tiny nicks to the edge at 9 o'clock and some minuscule contact marks on the reverse, but no significant wear.

The medal comes on an original suspension, an early post-war model in brass. The old ribbon is nicely preserved and sound. The silver connecting link appears to be original; its ends are still joined with solder.
