Photo of Polikarpov U-2 (aka PO-2) Airplane in Flight, 1930s-40s.

Measures 7" x 5", printed on thin glossy photo paper. The photo presents the famous кукурузник ("kukuruznik", which means "corn crop duster"), the multi-purpose biplane U-2, creation of the Polikarpov aircraft design team. The "U" stands for "Uchebny" (trainer), and the light simple and reliable U-2 was ideal for that. But it also served well during the war for aerial reconnaissance, ground attack, liaison missions, etc. It was one of the most mass-produced aircraft, manufactured continuously until 1953 with about 33,00

It was one of the most mass-produced aircraft, manufactured continuously until 1953 with about 33,000 built. In 1944, after the death of its chief designer, N. Polikarpov (Николай Николаевич Поликарпов, 1892 - 1944), the plane was renamed PO-2 in his honor.

The photo is in very good to excellent condition. The emulsion is unbroken and shows just light storage wear, and that only if the photo is tilted to reflect a bright light. The corners show minor creases, and the paper is a little wrinkled on the right side. All the wear is not too intrusive to the eye and not even very noticeable when looking at the photo at a normal viewing angle.

Please note that the penny in our photo is for size reference.
