The book measures 6" x 9", in laminated hard cover. Published by the Political Publishing House at the People's Commissariat of Justice of the USSR, 384 pp., circulation 100,000 copies. The book was compiled from the verbatim records of the hearing which lasted from 2 to 13 March 1938, and was daily published in the Pravda and Izvestiya newspapers.

In good to very good condition. The plain paper with which the hard cover is laminated shows considerable wear, nothing unexpected considering that it is not protected in any way. The edges and corners show some fraying, the spine has a tear at the bottom and closer to the middle. The inner hinge shows a separation of the pastedown from the front free-endpaper. The same separation is evident at the back inner hinge. However, the binding is reasonably strong and tight, all the pages of the textblock are in place, the text is bright and clear. The paper of the internal pages is lightly and evenly age-toned and still quite supple.

This court case was one of the most significant ones, if not the very pinnacle, of the Great Purge of the leadership of NKVD, the Party and the Red Army, consolidating Stalin's iron grip on the entire country. And perhaps the most astonishing part of the book is in the last three chapters containing the last word of each of the accused. Even knowing full well what was in store for them, even though some of them had participated in the execution of others and had first-hand experience in the outcome of such court cases, most of them continued to play Stalin's game, confessing their crimes and expressing their repentance, and devotion to the Soviet Power.
