Hand-Painted Coffee Set of three items: demitasse cup and two saucers, by Riga Porcelain Factory, Latvia, 1970-80s.

Elegant, delicate and light, the entire set with the cup on top of the stacked saucers does not reach 2 ½" in height. The cup alone is 1 ¾" tall, 2 ¾" wide at the lip and 1 ¼" across at the foot. The small saucer is 4" across, the larger saucer is 5 ¼" in diameter. An airy light ornament in pink, framed in black with light-gray shadows has a tiny convex gold-plated dot in the middle, and also at the top and bottom. The small saucer has no ornament, its pink color accenting the pink of the ornament on the cup and the large saucer.

Each item is maker marked on the bottom. This version of the Riga Porcelain Factory logo was used from 1970 through 1980s (fig. # 622 in Volume One of Marks on Soviet Porcelain, Faience, and Majolica, 1917-1991 by Nasonova et al). The green color of the mark indicates the third level of quality.

In excellent condition. There is no post-production wear or damage visible to the naked eye, but a few manufacturing defects can be found at close inspection, e.g., microscopic indentations in the mass, or more conspicuous ones on the large saucer: two spots of missing glaze, and two smears of gilt. With the exception of the gilt smears, none of the wear is easily noticeable even at close inspection.

Artistically, the Riga Porcelain Factory roots in the rich 19th century traditions of the Kuznetsov and Jessen masters. The nationalized successors of both Kuznetsov Riga and Jessen Riga Porcelain Factories were merged in 1963 into the Riga Porcelain and Faience Factory, later renamed the Riga Porcelain Factory.
