Vladimir Chernavin (Владимир Николаевич Чернавин, 1928 - 2023) was a distinguished nuclear submarine captain. In 1962, his K-21 submarine was the first in the Soviet Navy to complete a 50-days-long autonomous journey under the Arctic ice. Just four years after that, his submarine participated in an unprecedented in the history of the Soviet Navy 25,000-mile-long trek without a single surfacing.

Chernavin rose to Commander of the Northern Fleet and eventually, to Commander in Chief of the USSR Navy and Deputy Minister of Defense. In 1993, he was sent into retirement from active duty, but continued to stay active as an inspector and consultant.

Chernavin died in 2023 after a long illness and was buried with military honors at the Federal military memorial "Pantheon of the Defenders of the Fatherland".
