Medal for the Defense of Stalingrad, Variation 1, 1940s issue.

In brass; measures 32.0 mm wide; weighs 15.8 g not including the suspension and connecting link. First variation of the medal featuring a separate eyelet soldered to the medallion.

In very fine condition. The medallion is free of edge knocks, nicks or noticeable dings. Both sides show only a tiny amount of wear to the raised points; the details of the artwork and lettering are well-preserved. There is an attractive toning to the brass throughout and just a minimal amount of tarnish, no big blemishes or oxidation spots. Some of the original "gilt" mint luster is still visible

There is an attractive toning to the brass throughout and just a minimal amount of tarnish, no big blemishes or oxidation spots. Some of the original "gilt" mint luster is still visible in recessed areas of the obverse.

The medal comes on an original suspension, a WW2 two-layer model in steel with a self-locking pin. The perfectly clean ribbon shows age, although it is clearly more recent than the medal itself. The connecting link appears to be original; its ends are still joined with solder. Overall, an attractive wartime example of the Stalingrad Medal.
