In excellent condition. The enamel shows a nice luster and is free of significant wear visible to the unaided eye. There are just some tiny "dot" imperfections on the white enamel that are probably factory flaws rather than the result of wear; the enamel also has some minuscule scratches that are unnoticeable without magnification but is completely free of chips, flaking or other noticeable damage. The wires attaching the ice pick are intact and tight. The screw post is of full or near full length, approx. 7.5 mm. The screw plate is a replacement of late 1940s - mid 1950s vintage, but fits the screw perfectly.
This badge was awarded in the pre-WW2 period exclusively to highly qualified mountain climbers. During the war, they became the core of the Soviet mountain rifle units that would fight the German Gebirgsjäger Alpine troops in the Caucasus and, much later in the war, in the Carpathians and mountainous regions of Czechoslovakia and Austria.
