The Treaty of Brest Litovsk was a separate peace treaty between Soviet Russia and the Central Powers by which Russia withdrew from WW1. The treaty cost Russia control of Ukraine, Poland, Belorussia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, as well as two of its Caucasus provinces and Finland. That was in addition to reparations to Germany in the amount of 6 billion marks. However, now the Bolsheviks could focus on eliminating their internal enemies. The treaty was annulled on 11 November 1918 when Germany surrendered to the western Allied Powers. Soviet Russia's attempts to re-gain the lost territories led to a mixed bag of results: failures with the three Baltic countries and Poland, successful invasion of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia, and victory in the Ukrainian-Soviet war, to use the term often used in post-Soviet Ukraine.
