Letter Home from an Austrian Soldier in a Russian POW Camp, 1915.

The size is standard 5 ½" x 3 ½", printed on unbleached but fine-quality paper. Special issue for correspondence from, to, or between prisoners of war. The "from" area on the left side of the obverse identifies the POW as Johan Weidinger, incarcerated in the city of Orlov, Vyatka Province, Russia. The postcard is addressed to a person living in Vienna, Austria. The two postal stamps tell us that it took from 23 March to 5 June 1915 for the postcard to reach its destination. Rather uncommonly, the obverse also shows not one but two censor stamps - Russian, oval in purple ink, and Austria

Also noteworthy is the evolution of the format of these special postcards. Instead of a blank space for the message, the verso has two pre-printed sections, in German and in Hungarian, where the POW could just enter the place where he was kept and sign his hame. The message reads "I am imprisoned in the city [CityName], province [ProvinceName]. I am healthy and not wounded. You can also write to me in my mother tongue. Best regards, [name]."

In excellent condition. The paper is wrinkle-free, the upper right-hand corner shows trace of an old water stain, not very obvious; the corners have minuscule bumps. Both sides are completely free of soiling of any kind.
