The medal is in outstanding, excellent condition. The raised details are perfect and exceptionally crisp on both sides of the medallion. The medal is in outstanding, excellent condition. The raised details are perfect and exceptionally crisp on both sides of the medallion. The obverse is literally pristine, showing no wear visible to the naked eye and only a few microscopic contact marks that could barely be found with a 10x loupe. The reverse has only some minuscule contact marks that are almost unnoticeable without magnification, no significant wear. The toning to the brass is even and extremely attractive, free of blemishes or significant tarnish; the original "gilt finish" (mint luster) is clearly visible in recessed areas.

The medal comes on an original suspension device, a WW2 two-layer model in steel with self-locking pin. The connecting link appears to be original, and its ends are still joined with solder. The old, probably original ribbon is extremely clean and sound, showing only a minimal wear along the edges.

To summarize, this is a truly superb example of the Variation 1 Defense of Moscow Medal - about as good as they come for a WW2 issue.
