The Union of Militant Atheists was a government-sponsored organization which officially existed during 1925-1947. It was most active in the 20s when it often fomented anti-Christian violence. In the 30s, when most churches had already been destroyed, turned into warehouses or converted into "museums of atheism", the "Union" was mostly limited to collecting donations as well as brainwashing the youth. The organization was quietly curtailed in 1941 when the Soviet authorities tapped into Russian patriotism and co-opted the Russian Orthodox Church for the war effort. The pin offered here, one of the earliest issued by the Union, was probably given out as a means of propagandizing the organization. Although of modest "tinny" quality, it is far more scarce than the typical Union of Militant Atheist membership badges.
