M 1972 Army (Land Forces) Lieutenant General Field Uniform Tunic, circa early 1970s.

Single-breasted, in olive green wool gabardine with olive drab plastic buttons, subdued silk embroidery on lapels, red piping on the collar. Shoulder boards are piped in red and have embroidered olive drab stars. Lined in artificial silk. The buttons have a date "69" on the back side, indicating that the tunic was probably made within the following few years.

The sewn-in set of ribbon bars includes a large number of WW2 decorations. The ribbons in the top row are for the Order of the Red Banner, Order Alexander Nevsky, Order of the Patriotic War 1st cl., and Order of the Red Star. The second row starts with a ribbon for another Order of the Red Star, followed by Combat Service, Lenin Centenary, and Defense of Moscow Medals. Ribbons in the third row are for the Medals for the Defense of the Soviet Arctic Region, Victory over Germany, 20th Anniversary of Victory and the Capture of Berlin. Fourth row has ribbons for the Liberation of Prague and 30th, 40th and 50th Anniv. of the Armed Forces. The last row has ribbons for the Irreproachable Service Medal, 1st cl. (for 20 years of service in the military) and two foreign awards. Judging by the ribbons, the general entered military service during or immediately before the war. Note the uncommonly large number of WW2 campaign medals, five in total. The chronologically last decoration in the set that can be positively dated is the 1965 Anniversary of Victory Medal.

Medium size: the chest measures approximately 41", the sleeves (from cuff to shoulder seam) are 24.5" long; the length from top of collar to bottom hem is 28".

Very good condition. The tunic is completely free of moth damage and has only a couple of tiny, nearly unnoticeable snags to the olive-green gabardine. The exterior is free of signficant soiling and appears partically perferct from the front. There are a couple of relatively small and faint stains near the right pocket towards the back (greatly exaggerated in our photos) that are covered by the sleeve and practically unnoticeable when the uniform is displayed. Beside that, there is just a very small amount of tiny "sprinkle" stains near the bottom hem, barely noticdeable at a normal viewing distance. The interior is perfectly clean. Please note, the belt shown in our photos is not included but may be available for purchase separately.

Tunics of this type were in use only from 1972 through 1988. We include a reproduction of an illustration from the Ministry of Defense's 1974 Soviet armed forces uniform guide to show the proper manner of wear: peaked cap, boots, ribbon bars and graduation badges (from the "higher" military schools), and red-striped breeches.
