The Special Purpose Partisan Brigade had its beginning in a special purpose (Spetsnaz) detachment of highly trained NKVD saboteurs led by M.S. Prudnikov and inserted behind the front lines in the village of Bakshty in the Polotsk Region of Belorussia in March 1942. The unit was tasked with reconnaissance in the deep rear of the enemy and important sabotage operations. Initially a very small group, it soon grew into a whole brigade and under the leadership of its daring commander Major Anatoliy Morozov, earned the sobriquet of "Elusive Brigade". In September 1943, it set off from its original base of operations in the Polotsk region moving in the southwestern direction and by December of that year, had had fought through 450 km of enemy-held territory reaching the area of the villages of Bakshty and Zaberez in the huge Naliboki Forest near the Berezina River west of Minsk. The brigade proved such a thorn in the German side that a special reward was assigned for the head of its commander.
