Medal for the Defense of Soviet Polar Region, Variation 1, circa 1943-46 issue.

In brass; measures 32.1 mm wide, 2.6-2.7 mm thick at the edge; weighs 16.9 g not including the suspension and connecting link.

In outstanding, excellent condition. The details are perfect and crisp on both sides. The medal is practically free of visible wear, and has only some minuscule contact marks, mostly on the reverse, that are nearly unnoticeable to the naked eye. The original "gilt" mint luster is exceptionally well-preserved and bright throughout. There is only a very minimal amount of light tarnish that adds character rather than detracts - no significant blemishes

The medal comes on an early post-war suspension, a double-layer model in steel with integral catch of the pin. The old, likely original ribbon is slightly faded but otherwise beautifully preserved and sound. The connecting link appears to be of the period. Overall, it is a magnificent example of the Soviet medal for fighting in the Arctic - one of the best we've handled in recent years!
