In stainless steel with gilt, silver plating and enamels. Exceptionally massive piece measuring approx. 11.5 " in height, 11" in width; weighs over 7 lb. Riveted multi-piece construction. The center medallion features very nicely details Soviet state emblem in raised tri-dimensional profile. The slogan "Proletarians of All Countries, Unite!" carefully spelled out in national languages on the 15 scrolls representing the republics of the USSR. The pentagon shape of the center part represents the so-called "Sign of Quality" - highest Soviet quality standard designation. The writing in the red scroll on the wreath is "Fifty Years, USSR 1922-1972". The reverse of the wreath has stamped mint logo MMД ("MMD", Moscow Mint.) Despite its size, the quality is superb, on par with the best state decorations. Just like the other high decorations of the period, these plaques - or award badges as they were officially called - were manufactured not only by the Soviet State Mint but also by the LYuM factory acting as the mint's subcontractor.

The plaque is in outstanding, excellent condition. The enamels are perfect; the silver and finishes are almost pristine having only tiny contact marks, no significant wear of any kind. The gold plating on the Soviet state seal is particularly nice and bright. The finish on the reverse shows minor amount of tarnish but no significant oxidation, pitting or scuffs.

The plaque comes in original issue / display box in plastic with translucent Plexiglas top. The lower part has a fitted nest for the "badge". The display case is in in good overall condition. Its red bottom portion is completely intact and sound, has only minor scuffs on the back that are not visible when the plaque is on display. Most importantly, the beige background with the nest for the plaque is perfect and will serve beautifully as the backdrop for the plaque when it's displayed as intended. The translucent top has some cracks on its shorter sides, but the damage is limited to the vertical facets. The damage is not very conspicuous and the plaque will still display very nicely inside the box, especially considering that the undamaged part of the box will be facing to the front when the lid is closed. Albeit showing a few minor scratches, the Plexiglas is free of significant rubbing and retains nice translucency, not yellowed from age and exposure to sun.

The plaque's official (and very long-winded) name was "Jubilee Award Badge by the Central Committee of the CPSU, Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Council of Ministers of the USSR and All-Union Central Committee of Trade Unions for Achieving Best Results in the Al-Union Socialist Competition in Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the USSR" This award was bestowed upon relatively few best factories, state farms, hospitals etc. Interestingly, some of the Soviet military units were awarded as well.

Please note: the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in our last two photographs are only there to give you an idea of the plaque's size and are not included with the purchase of the plaque.
