Parachute Jump Badge, 1931 type, #27401, circa late 1930s issue.

Brass, enamels; 43.7 x 17.8 mm. The first Soviet parachute badge design featuring pointed bottom tip. This particular variation of the badge features more detailed and realistic depiction of the paratrooper compared with some others. The reverse has engraved inscription "OAX" (Russian abbreviation for OSOAVIAKhIM) and serial number.

In very fine to excellent condition, well above the average for the first Soviet jump badges. The enamel shows nice luster and is free of significant wear or rubbing. There are only some tiny contact marks and a single miniscule surface

There are only some tiny contact marks and a single miniscule surface flake at the feet of the paratrooper, none of which are easily noticeable without magnification. The screw post is approx. 8.5 mm long. There is attractive dark toning to the brass throughout with minimal verdigris on the reverse, as is often the case. Some of the original silver finish is visible around the screw post. The badge comes with original screw plate marked "Vsekokhudoznik, Moscow." Overall, this is a very attractive example of what is rightly considered the WW2 Soviet paratrooper's badge.

Although this badge was officially an OSOAVIAKhIM award, most of them were actually issued by the Red Army. /See "Avers 8"p. 432, fig. 2050.b, also Borisov, "Badges of the Soviet Armed Forces", fig. 43/.
