Portrait of Stalin, original, gouache on oilcloth, circa late 1940s.
Large format measuring 26" x 34". This is an original vignette portrait in gouache on oilcloth with a painted ornamental frame. Unfortunately, the artwork is unsigned. Stalin is depicted wearing his marshal's uniform with the marshal's star, Order of Suvorov 1st class, the Gold star of Hero of Socialist Labor which he wore all the time, Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner and a medal for 20th anniversary of RKKA.
In very good to excellent condition. The artwork shows no significant wear or damage. There are holes from nails, left from the time when the portrait had been mounted on a wall or a backing of some sort. The colors are fresh and vibrant, not faded. The oilcloth is supple; despite being stored rolled up, the portrait stays flat without any problems when laid down on a flat surface.
There are many portraits of Stalin replicating this image with minor variations. Compared to other versions of this portrait, this artist apparently decided to go with a minimum of decorations. And was rather creative in solving the framing problem.
This unusual portrait, so different from millions of official mass-produced ones, adds a somewhat unexpected perspective to Stalin's cult of personality, and the eagerness of the Soviet population to have his image in every personal, work, or public space.
Please note that the 1-ft. ruler in our photo is for size reference.
