This is the very first issue of Zvaigzne. Even though the magazine was clearly meant to be a Latvian-language version of the All-Union Russian-language Ogonyok (Little Flame), mixing propaganda with a sprinkle of theater and literature here, and sports and leisure there to whet the readers' interest, this issue is very heavy on propaganda. It is dedicated to celebrating the 10th anniversary of Latvian SSR, even though five of those ten years were under the Nazi Germany. That explains the abundance of red banners on the covers and the state emblem of Latvian SSR, the color plate with a full-page Stalin's portrait after the page-long poem "Greetings to Stalin" on the title page, and on throughout the issue, extolling the advantages of the Soviet power in every aspect of Latvians' lives. Only the last two pages have some sports news, a chess challenge, and a crossword puzzle, Ogonyok-style.
