The Turkestan District included troops stationed in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, as well as the 40th Army deployed in Afghanistan. The badge was awarded to its veteran servicemen. This is one of the very few Soviet-period decorations directly associated with service in Afghanistan, even though not overtly mentioning it.
