This hat device was used exclusively by the presidential guard of Mohammad Najibullah, a former chief of KHAD secret police and the leader of Afghanistan in the last few years of Soviet occupation. Despite mounting pressure against his rule, he managed to stay in power for a while after the Soviet withdrawal. In 1992, left without foreign support after the collapse of the USSR, Najibullah was finally forced to resign. He was unable to escape Kabul and remained there for a few more years holed up in a UN compound. In 1996, he was seized by Taliban, tortured and executed.
The hat badge offered here is a rare artifact of his regime. It was brought back by an American veteran who had found several of these in Kabul with the help of a former government official soon after the US takeover in 2001.
