In very fine to excellent condition. The enamel has a couple of minuscule flakes that are nearly unnoticeable to the naked eye, otherwise perfect and shows a nice luster. The gilt finish is well-preserved and bright on both sides; there are just a few very tiny oxidation spots and mild tarnish on the reverse, none of which is detractive. The screw post is full length and includes an original unmarked screw plate. The old, clearly original ribbon is well-preserved and sound.

The medal was instituted by the Communist government of Afghanistan and produced at the Soviet mint. It was issued to all Soviet servicemen upon completion of their tour of duty in Afghanistan.
