In black patent leather with the lid in silver-plated brass with superimposed gilded Double-Headed Eagle. Measures approx. 8.5 cm in height, 16.5 cm in width in its widest section, over 4 cm in overall depth. It exhibits exquisite quality appropriate for the elite equestrian rank of its original owner. The brass panel covering the lid has beaded edges and is silver-plated in such a manner that it appears to be made of solid silver. The superimposed national emblem of the double-headed eagle is in 3-d profile, executed in beautiful detail and measuring about 6.5 mm thick. There is a Cyrillic maker mark НС / ВК ("NS/VK") in the upper right corner of the lid (closely imitating a period silver assay mark in its overall style albeit not in content, it furthers the impression that the lid is in solid silver.) The interior of the lid is lined in black velvet and trimmed with metallic tape. The kidney-shaped cartridge compartment is in black patent leather of superb quality.

The pouch is in excellent overall condition, remarkable for a Russian artifact of its age. The exterior is practically pristine, free of dents, scratches or other damage. The silver plating is exceptionally well-preserved showing only a mild patina that adds character and only a tiny, nearly unnoticeable amount of wear to the high points of the beads. The details of the eagle are perfect and crisp; a good amount of the original gold plating is present in its recessed areas.

The cartridge compartment has kept its form nicely and although the leather is wrinkled from age and scuffed in a few spots, it remains overall "healthy" and exhibits a nice gloss. The upper strap connecting the lid is torn but the lower strap and its brass peg closure are intact, making the pouch fully functional.

Overall, a superb piece, very impressive and quite rare in this condition!
