This model was at first worn by Soviet Spetznaz and commonly referred to as "Mobutu" cap, named after the Congo dictator who the Soviets attempted to destabilize and overthrow. The original cap design dates to the early 1970s and was intended for export to Africa, eventually a Soviet tropical cap was designed on its basis and the nickname remained. This cap was later widely used by Soviet soldiers in Afghanistan.

The size is marked 55 (which corresponds with US size 6 7/8, Small.)
