Italy, Order of Saint Joseph of Tuscany, Knight's Grand Cross Sash Badge and Sash.
The Badge is in silver gilt and enamels, 100.8 mm in height (incl. crown), 74.6 mm in width, and weighs 94.4 g. The obverse center medallion portrays Saint Joseph in gold relief encircled by a red-enameled band bearing the motto UBIQUE SIMILIS ("Everywhere the Same") in gold. The reverse center medallion features the abbreviated "S.J" for Saint Joseph, "F" for the order's founder Ferdinand III, and the year of the order's institution.
The badge is in excellent condition. The crown sits a tiny bit askew tilting a fraction of a degree to the right, looking from the obverse. Other than that, there is a barely noticeable tiny scuff to the white enamel of the 4 o'clock arm of the cross. We tried to "catch" it in our photo as much as we could.
The Sash is in moiré silk, 4" wide and approx. 29" long from the end to the small tie holding the cross. In excellent condition. The red is partially discolored to gold color due to uneven exposure to light; otherwise, the silk is perfectly clean and free of any significant wear.
The Order of St. Joseph of Tuscany is a historic Tuscan chivalric order instituted on 19 March 1807 by Ferdinand III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, to recognize meritorious service, initially limited to Roman Catholic recipients demonstrating loyalty to the Grand Duke and personal integrity. The order's statutes were renewed from an earlier 16th-century foundation dating to 1514 and formally amended on 18 March 1817 after Ferdinand III's return to Tuscany, at which point it expanded to include non-Catholic foreigners and Tuscan citizens for valorous acts in wartime and peacetime.
