Silvered brass, paints. The medallion measures 33 mm wide. The original fitted issue box is in cardboard laminated with leatherette-textured paper. The fitted space is finished in black short-nap faux fir. The lid is lined with light fabric.

The medal is in very fine to excellent condition, showing very attractive patina. The paints are completely intact, their colors vibrant and fresh. It looks like the eyelet has been pulled at some point, strongly enough to break away from the medallion on one side. The ribbon on the suspension and ribbon bar appears to be of the period, possibly original. The box is in very good to excellent condition, slightly scuffed at the corners and edges.

The Medal of Merit of the German Democratic Republic (original name "Verdienstmedaille der DDR") was instituted on 6 April 1959 as a civilian decoration awarded to DDR citizens and those of fellow socialist states for distinction through special achievements and faithful fulfillment of duties in the construction of socialism.
