Medal for Victory over Japan, Variation 1, circa 1945-46.
In brass; measures 37.8 mm in height incl. eyelet, 32.2 mm wide; weighs 17.0 g not including the suspension and connecting link. Features a separate eyelet soldered to the medallion.
In very fine to excellent condition. There are a few tiny scratches to the bas-relief portrait of Stalin that are barely noticeable without magnification. The medallion is otherwise free of noticeable wear; the raised artwork and inscription are extremely well-preserved and crisp, including details of Stalin's uniform and decorations. The reverse in particular is nearly pristine, with its original "gilt" mint luster clearly visible in recessed areas. The obverse has some areas of mild tarnish, none of it very detractive.
Comes on a late 1940s suspension, a single-layer model in brass. The ribbon is old, probably of the period; although it shows a modest amount of soiling, it is still perfectly sound and very attractive. The connecting link also appears to be of the period. Overall, a nice example of the early version of the Victory over Japan Medal.
