Badge) of a Veteran of Labor of the Sarkanais Kvadrāts Rubber Goods Factory, Riga, Latvian SSR, circa 1960s-70s.
Brass, "cold" enamels; measures 22.5 mm in height x 23.6 mm in width. A well-made, uncommon, and relatively early piece with an interesting design incorporating the factory's trademark with the acronym "SK" and the national flag of Latvian SSR. Excellent condition.
The company was founded in 1924 during the period of Latvian interwar independence and was financed by foreign, mostly Dutch capital. Its original name, Baltic Indian Rubber Company Kvadrats, changed to Sarkanais Kvadrāts (The Red Square) once the factory was nationalized immediately following the Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1940. Its main production was rubber footwear such as galoshes, rubber boots and flip-flops, but it also produced a wide assortment of other rubber goods such as children's toys and industrial products. The company was privatized after the collapse of the USSR and broken up into four different firms, one of which retained the original name Kvadrats and went bankrupt in 1999.
