Badge of a Veteran Worker of the Riga Railway Car Building Works (RVR), Latvian SSR, circa 1970s-80s.

Brass, paint; 22.0 mm. The inscription and abbreviated name of the factory are in Latvian.

In excellent condition. The paint and finish are perfect. The pin attachment is fully functional.

Now defunct, the RVZ Riga Railway Car Building Works (more widely known by its Russian-language acronym РВЗ or "RVZ") used to be one of the largest industrial enterprises in Latvia. It was founded in 1895 and by the beginning of WW1 reportedly had produced some 28,000 freight and passenger railway cars. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the factory went bankrupt, was subsequently purchased by Ford and got refitted to produce cars and buses becoming the largest car maker in the Baltics. Following the Soviet takeover and WW2, it returned to manufacturing railway cars and expanded its output to trams and trolleybuses, as well as a wide array of household goods such as refrigerators (a scarce commodity during the Soviet era). Interestingly, its output of railway cars apparently never reached the pre-WW1 level judging by the fact that only some 30,000 were produced over the entire Soviet period.

Please note, the penny in our photo is for size reference.
