Medal for the Defense of Stalingrad, Variation 1, 1940s issue.

In brass; 37.0 mm in height incl. eyelet, 32.0 mm in width; weighs 16.1 g not including the suspension and connecting link. First variation of the medal featuring a separate eyelet soldered to the medallion.

In excellent condition. The raised details on both sides of the medallion are perfect and exceptionally crisp. Both sides are completely free from significant scratches, edge knocks or any other serious flaws. There are some tiny contact marks throughout, all of them barely noticeable or completely invisible to the naked eye. There are no significant blemishes or oxidation spots; the original "gilt" mint luster is clearly visible and bright, especially on the obverse, with just a minimal amount of tarnish.

The medal comes on an original suspension, a WW2 two-layer model in steel with a self-locking pin. The old, possibly original ribbon is perfectly preserved, clean and sound. The connecting link has been cut but appears to be of the period. Overall, a very attractive specimen of the Stalingrad Medal, one of the better examples we have offered in recent years.
