Membership Badge of the Vodnik Sports Club of Merchant Fleet Sailors (and other employees of river and ocean going merchant fleets), 1970s-80s.

Anodized aluminum, paint, lacquer; measures 18.3 mm in height, 16.0 mm in width. The reverse shows the logo ЗСЗ ("ZSZ") of the Moscow Sports Badges Factory. Excellent condition.

The somewhat archaic Russian word Vodnik can be literally translated as "Waterman". The DSO (sports club) under this name was originally created in 1937. By 1957, it had absorbed two other sports clubs, Vympel ("Pennant") and Moryak ("Seaman"). Unlike most other Soviet sports clubs of specific trade unions or industries, it was spared during the reorganization of 1957 and continued to exist alongside mainly regional, republic-level DSOs.
