First Day Cover Commemorating the 1990 Japan-Soviet Joint Space Flight, 1990.
The size is 6 ¼" x 4 ½", postally unused, published by the Ministry of Communications of the USSR, circulation unknown. The obverse features a special-issue postal stamp commemorating the Soyuz TM-11 mission which launched on 2 December 1990, and carried to space the first Japanese person, journalist Toyohiro Akiyama who stayed for a week on the Soviet Mir space station, broadcasting live from space for TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System). The stamp is canceled with the First Day stamp issued by Zvezdnyy Gorodok ("Star City"), the cosmonaut training center in Moscow suburbs. The cancel is dated 2 December 1990, the date of the launch. The space-themed artwork on the left panel is the work of artist M. Morozov, whose name is printed on the bottom flap of the verso.
