Military Photo ID of the Chief of Staff of the 27th Separate Road Construction Battalion, 4th Army, Volkhov Front, issued on 23 January 1942 to senior lieutenant Anatoliy Zvirgzde (Анатолий Эдуардович Звиргзде).
In booklet format measuring 4" x 3", in oilcloth-wrapped hard cover. The lettering on the front cover reads "NKO (Narkomat of Defense) of the USSR, Identification Card." The ID photo inside is validated by the ink stamp of the 27th Separate Road Construction Battalion and the hand signatures of its commander and chief of staff, predecessor of Zvirgzde who was appointed to this post on 24 August 1942. The ID lists his date and place of birth (1911, Kiev), positions with the 27th Battalion, military rank, marital status (married), and the issued firearm - a Nagant revolver.
In very good condition. The wear to the oilcloth of the cover is mild; the photo ID page shows the left edge of the cardboard missing. The ID photo is not in very sharp focus but clean, the face is clearly identifiable. The tiny foxing spots on the photo become visible only at strong magnification. All the handwritten entries are clear, crisp, and perfectly legible.
At the time of issue of this ID, the Volkhov Front was engaged in heavy fighting near the town of Lyuban about 60 miles southeast of Leningrad, tasked with overwhelming enemy defenses on the west bank of the Volkhov River and then, together with units of the Leningrad Front, break the blockade of Leningrad.
