Afghanistan, Medal for Protecting the Borders, 1980s.

In brass; measures 36.9 mm in height incl. eyelet, 32.1 mm wide; weighs 17.1 g not including the suspension and connecting link. Shows an Afghan soldier near a border marker with mountains in the background. Raised inscription in Dari on the reverse.

In outstanding, excellent condition, extremely uncommon for this medal. The raised details are pristine. The gilt finish is very well preserved and bright throughout, nearly pristine. Includes Soviet style suspension device with a scarce original ribbon in brand new condition. This specimen is one the best examples of this medal we have handled in the past few years.

Established in 1980, this medal was manufactured in the Soviet Union like most other Afghanistan awards of the communist period. It was awarded by the puppet government of Afghanistan mostly to Afghan border guard troops but also to some Soviet soldiers.
