Postcard Budyonny's Cavalry Repelling Enemy Attack on Foot, artist signed, 1957.
The size is continental 6" x 4", postally unused and unmarked. Published by The Soviet Artist Publishing House, Moscow. Circulation 25,000, extremely small by Soviet standards. The artist's name, M. Grekov, is printed in the lower left-hand corner on the verso. His hand signature is seen in the lower left-hand corner of the artwork. The artwork is an offset print from Grekov's 1934 oli-on-canvas painting on exhibit in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
In excellent condition. The lower left-hand corner has a tiny crease, not reaching the artwork. There is an inscription on the verso inside the postal stamp placeholder, "16 August 1958."
Somewhat contrary to the legend of Budyonny's 1st Cavalry Army that painted them as rushing into a fight to save the day for the Red Army, this painting depicts an episode where the cavalry was not in the saddle and not attacking.
Mitrofan Grekov (Митрофан Борисович Греков, 1882 - 1934) was a renowned Russian and Soviet painter considered to be the father of Soviet battle painting.
