Postcard At Stalingrad. Thirty-Three Anti-Tank Gunners, 1976.

The size is continental 6" x 4", unmailable without a cover. Published by the Visual Arts Publishing House, Moscow, circulation 35,000 copies, very small by Soviet standards. The artist's name, I Yevstigneyev, is printed in the lower left-hand corner on the verso. The artwork is an offset print of Yevstigneyev's huge 1.65 x 3.4 meter oil-on-canvas painting, on exhibit in the Central Armed Forces Museum in Moscow.

In excellent, superb condition.

The painting refers to an episode of the Battle of Stalingrad described in A. Yeremenko's book Stalingrad: Notes of the Front Commander. On 24 August 1942, thirty-three soldiers from different units of the 87th Rifle Division holding a defensive position, were attacked by 70 tanks of the German 16th Panzer Division supported from the air. Having lost 27 tanks and 153 officers and lower ranks, the Germans retreated. Miraculously, there were no casualties among the Red Army heroes.
