The 16th Air Army was formed by the 8 August 1942 order of the People's Commissariat of Defense in response to the worsening situation near Stalingrad and initially comprised parts of the 8th Air Army and reserve units of the Stavka, the Supreme Command of the Soviet Armed Forces. After distinguishing themselves in the Battle of Stalingrad, the 16th Air Army fought in the Battle of the Kursk Bulge, providing air support to the troops of the Central Front. Having grown ten times from its original size, the 16th fought in Belorussia and Poland, and eventually, as part of the 1st Belorussian Front, participated in the Berlin operation. From its formation until the end of the Patriotic War, the 16th Air Army made over 288,000 combat missions.
