DOSAAF (Volunteer Society to Support Army, Aviation and Navy) Membership Badge, circa 1950s.

Brass, enamels; 24.9 x 19.1 mm. Features a relatively smooth reverse. Beautiful quality, incomparable to the common late-issue badges in aluminum.

Excellent condition. The enamel is perfect and shows a beautiful luster. The original fire-gilt finish is clearly visible in recessed areas of the wreath and on the reverse. The screw post is full length, approx. 9 mm, and includes a screw plate with the early Pobeda Factory logo, which is of the period and believed to be original to the badge.

The DOSAAF was an ostensibly volunteer organization but in reality, membership was often compulsory for young people. Its purpose was to prepare Soviet youth (including females) for service in the military and possibly war. Practically all of its officials and many of the instructors were military veterans, some of them even high-ranking WW2 generals. The organization was massive in its scale running numerous training programs such as parachute jumps, airplane model building, sharp shooting, driving and much more. It also organized various tournaments in "applied military sports".

Please note, the penny in our photo is for size reference.
